The Bosnian Genocide is not as well-known as some other Genocides, however it was the largest atrocity to take place on European soil, after the world said "never again", after the Holocaust. Justice has yet to be served for the victims of this genocide, which is why it is even more important to ensure the right facts are being presented to students.
Book: Necessary Targets: A Story of Women and War Description: Two American women–a well-heeled New York psychiatrist and her younger colleague–travel to a refugee camp intending to help Bosnian women “tell their stories” after the brutal war in Yugoslavia. Inexperienced in the field, the doctor learns to stop patronizing and start listening, while her more brittle companion retreats into therapeutic jargon. source: https://ocfordarfur.wordpress.com/2011/04/05/good-books-and-films-about-the-bosnia-genocide/ Tips: many of the novels written about the Bosnian Genocide are hard to swallow, the writing can be explicit, this book has some explicit content, however as a teacher it is your duty to prepare your students and exclude subject matter you find too explicit. This novel is also a good opportunity to discuss topics of woman's rights and gender roles. Remember, teaching genocide opens up doors to other themes, making links is important in understanding why genocides took place to begin with. Movie: No Man's Land Description: This film follows the story of three soldiers. Fleeing enemy fire, an injured Bosnian soldier named Čiki retreats to a trench, where he finds himself trapped with a wounded comrade and a Serbian. With no way to escape and with his fellow soldier lying on a spring-loaded bomb set to explode if he moves, Čiki realizes he must do the unthinkable, trust his enemy, if he wants to survive. Tips: This film does have some explicit language however as with the other examples, a class that has been educated on the subject matter should be able to look passed a few foul words. I have seen this film for myself, an oscar award winning film, it is an excellent portrayal of the Bosnian Genocide. It touches on issues of the global community's role - in particular the UN, on issues of us vs. the other, and of course on Genocide. source: https://ocfordarfur.wordpress.com/2011/04/05/good-books-and-films-about-the-bosnia-genocide/ |
