Genocide is often considered to be a sensitive topic of study. This is likely because of the atrocities that occurred and how it has affected many people in both present and past societies. Because of this it is difficult to gauge when it is appropriate to teach the topic of genocide in the classroom. There is literature out there (Melnyk, 2011) that suggests students who are younger than high school age are not mentally prepared to learn about genocide but based on what we have learned during PDP and our past experiences we strongly believe that it heavily depends on the specific group of students you have in your class. My partner and I do believe that the primary age in elementary may be too young because the concepts of death, murder, and acts of violence may not be things they are completely aware of, but once you get to know your students and have created an open, safe, and honest learning environment we believe that the intermediate elementary students may be capable of learning about this topic. It all depends on your specific class and there may be cases where two different classes of the same grade may have one that are capable of learning about genocide and one that is not. If you get to know your students at a close level you will likely be able to determine if this is an appropriate topic of study.
